Career: 'In 1985, after finishing my studies in film school, I started as a production assistant on commercials. The visual image fascinated me. I had done my military service in 1984 as a cameraman and I had already done little bits on institutional films on video, but I never imagined that I could break into the tiny world of cinema. That's when I had a decisive meeting with an assistant operator. He took me on as a trainee, then as his second assistant. It's also he who later had the idea to accelerate my career a bit by pushing me to jump into the adventure of the Steadicam. Eight years later a director I had done Steadicam for asked me to do my first tvm as a Director of Photography. I could have devoted myself uniquely to that job, but that would have meant abandoning the Steadicam and I couldn't bring myself to do that. So then I alternated between the posts of doph for television and Steadicam operator for films. [...] The day after the start of filming on 'Taxi', the director, Gérard Pirès, who was supposed to shoot it himself, broke his arm. The production director then called me. And that's how I really started as a cameraman.'
