Born: 1960, Romford, Essex, UK, as Michael Eley.
Education: Leeds Polytechnic [Graphic Design].
Career: After college, Eley got a job as an assistant film editor with Aspect Films, a small independent film company in London. A few years later he segued to the camera department and trained as an assistant, mainly working on doc's. He eventually became a cameraman at the company and then began freelance jobs in 1989. He spent the next 10 years working on doc's for BBC-tv and Channel 4 before getting the chance to shoot dramatic films.

Member of the BSC since November 2010 and president since 2017.
Awards: BAFTA TV Award nom [1999; shared] for 'Lemurs'; British Independent Film Award [BIFA] 'Best Technical Achievement' [2004] for 'Touching the Void'; RTS Craft & Design Award 'Photography - Drama' [2006-07; 'Technically skilled, stunning to look at, the winner's talent was to find the tiny details of character, emotion and story set against a huge landscape of large vistas, castles and buildings. But most importantly his work was always in close sympathy with character.'] & 'Emmy' Award nom [2007; for Part 1] for 'Jane Eyre'; 'Emmy' Award nom [2009] for 'Grey Gardens'.
