REINIER VAN BRUMMELEN NSC

Born: c. 1961, Hilversum, Netherlands.

Education: Vrije Academie [Film and Photography Dept.], The Hague, where he followed workshops given by Frans Zwartjes.

Career: Because of his lighting work for VPRO-tv children's programs and short features, he was asked to work as a gaffer for doph Sacha Vierny on Peter Greenaway's 'Drowning by Numbers'.

Ph commercials dir by Erik Lieshout [for Aegon, Miele, Robijn (with Jules Deelder), etc.], Jelle Oortman Gerlings [for Crystal Clear), Thed Lenssen (for Wedel Chocolate), a.o.

Made lighting and set designs for exhibitions by Peter Greenaway in Rome, Venice, London, Vienna, Barcelona, Paris, etc. He also worked as a light designer for the Italian fashion house 'Trussardi' [e.g. the show 'Men Summer 2002']. Exhibition in Linz, Austria [CyberArts, 2005].

Member of the NSC.

Awards: Nederlands FF 'Gouden Kalf' nom [2007] for 'Nightwatching'.

'The Tulse Luper Suitcases' [2002]: 'This is the first movie we shot with Peter in High Definition and it has been a great joy. In my opinion we will never shoot on film again. One of the biggest virtues is "What you see is what you get", meaning: you're shooting, and Peter sees exactly what he's going to get. It means he's "painting" the moment that we're shooting. And it gives to Greenaway the opportunity to make the image his, which is a big, big virtue of shooting in HD. Another great thing about it is: with digital everything is digital, all the way, meaning that postproduction is a part of the process, and is not something which is put on top of the process. All is digital, so, in the proper hands, like Greenaway's hands, it's like the ideal combination of shooting on video and being able to use all the video possibilities, with a quality which is close to film.
