DERICK V. UNDERSCHULTZ

Education: Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Career: 'As a boy I always loved images. I played around with my parents and grandmother's still cameras. I just loved looking at images and manipulating them. Later, I studied film and television. After graduation, I worked in the film industry in Alberta. Originally, I was an assistant cameraman and editor, and did some work in a lab. That gave me a good overview. I got a chance to start shooting news and documentaries. Back then things were not as defined as they are now. People were more able to move around more than they can today.'

Appeared in the doc "By Any Means Necessary: The Making of 'Jason X'" [2002, Michelle Palmer; 17m].

Awards: 'Gemini' Award [1999] for 'Total Recall 2070' [ep #16 'Restitution' dir by Jorge Montesi]; 'Gemini' Award nom [2008] for 'The Trojan Horse'.

'Jason X' [2000]: 'Live-action scenes were photographed in 35mm three-perf format, which is a technique Derick Underschultz has used for television programs. Along with accommodating the visual effects team, there was inherent savings in film and lab costs. Many sets were extended and the CG images composited during the digital post-production process. "The size of a 1.85:1 full aperture image on a piece of negative film fits entirely within three perf," says Underschultz. "Since we were never cutting on film, there was never the requirement to have a four-perf negative to cut with. It was a budgetary decision that we would use the money saved shooting to create stronger visual effects." The entire original negative was converted to high definition format with a Phillips Spirit DataCine at Toybox in Toronto. Many shots were augmented with CG elements and other visual effects. The digital master was color-timed in HD format at Toybox and it was transferred to four-perf Eastman color intermediate film with an ARRI laser recorder.' [From KODAK InCamera, July 2001.]
