#1: From interview [Camerimage 2014]
Born: 27 June 1949, Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Education: University of Michigan [Psychology/History of Art].
Career: 'My mother was a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts and, later, an occasional art dealer. My dad photographed the family in 8mm and even in 16mm. My fate was sealed without my knowing it! I had little formal training in film. I took a few photography classes while getting degrees in psychology and the history of art at the University of Michigan. I also ran the film society's theater in Ann Arbor. I saw a different foreign film there every night; that became my education. When I moved to New York, I took a two-month filmmaking course taught by Jim Pasternak. I think I really caught the film bug from him. I answered an ad in the Village Voice to be a PA on a film. The crew was so small that I ended up in the electric department, where my journey to understand and create 'emotional light' began. After I was accepted into the New York union, gaffer Bobby Vercruse never hesitated to hire me in the electric department on rather large commercials and movies. He also supported my weekend-shooting aspirations by giving me gear from his company, Filmtrucks. I also gaffed for director/cinematographer Mark Obenhaus and his partner, cinematographer Arthur Albert. They loaned me their Éclair NPR so I could shoot my small films, and they were totally supportive of my move from electric to camera. My very first feature as a director of photography was a Western about Belle Starr filmed in Arkansas, but we were painfully low-budget and hardly anamorphic.' [From 'American Cinematographer' magazine.]
Ph 100+ music videos [a: Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Sting, Billy Idol, a.o.]. Shot some doc's on HD, one about 'Route 66' for NHK-tv, Japan, and one about 'Boxing'.
She was adjunct professor at the American Film Institute [1993-94].
Member of the ASC since 1995.
Appeared in the doc's 'Women Behind the Camera' [2001-2006, Alexis Krasilovsky] & 'Cinematographer Style' [2005, Jon Fauer; ph: J. Fauer, Jeff Laszlo, Brian Heller & David Morgan].
Awards: As doph: Independent Spirit Award nom [1994] for 'Chain of Desire'; Camerimage 'Golden Frog' nom [1994] for 'Dead Beat'; 'Emmy' Award nom [1996] for 'The Celluloid Closet'; Women in Film's 'Kodak Vision Award' [1997] for her narrative film work; Sundance FF 'Excellence in Dramatic Cinematography' Award [2004] for 'November'; ASC Presidents Award [2016].
As dir: Awards for her doc 'Possum Living'.
'November' [2003]: 'Familiar with her work, filmmaker Greg Harrison approached Nancy Schreiber and invited her to DP 'November'. Schreiber was engaged, but concerned about the technical limitations of DV shooting, which clearly would be dictated by the production budget. "I am primarily a film DP, and was concerned about resolution, or sharpness, when shooting 'November' on small, mini DV cameras, then taking the product out to film," she recalled, "but I was very interested in the AG-DVX100's 24p capabilities and its Leica lens. At that point, I'd only heard about the camcorder, but we tested it, and were impressed with its color handling, and my ability to control contrast and work in a totally manual mode. I particularly liked the ability to shoot at 1/24th sec shutter speed, which meant I could shoot inside or outside at night, with much less light. The camera also handled the highlights well, with a beautiful burn-out, and fewer artifacts than other similarly priced cameras."
'November' was shot in and around Los Angeles over the course of 15 days. The production used two AG-DVX100s, with an occasional third camcorder utilized for pick-up shots. Jamie Maxtone-Graham and Marie Chao worked with Schreiber as camera operators.
"I shot 'November' as if I were using a film camera," Schreiber said, "which I felt was critical to my work on the project. The DP explained that 'November' has three distinct 'chapters', each with its own color palette. "In the story, we keep returning to a convenience store, which we color balanced as a murky green. Then we had what we call the blue, golden and white 'chapters', matching the emotional journey of Sophie. We tried to do everything in-camera in terms of color and contrast, which was facilitated by the camera's Cine-Like setting and scene files. To achieve a film-like quality, I worked on the long-end of the lens, as wide open as possible, with not much depth of field. We had to do some wide shots - traditionally a liability with video cameras - but I thought these shots looked almost as good as if we'd shot with an expensive HD camera."
Schreiber continued, "I really appreciated the luxury of having the camera throughout pre-production. And, in advance, we were able to go to film-out while testing a variety of in-camera settings. The camera's Leica lens was indeed sharp, with great range. And I really liked the little fold-out screen that swivels in all directions, making it very easy to work with."
Director Harrison, who also served as the editor for 'November', said the post process was first-rate. "Because we shot 24p, we were able to have a film post-production work flow, which I considered essential. We edited on a beta version of Avid's Adrenaline, which handles up to seven streams of uncompressed video. We output digitally to Digital Betacam, and did real-time up-res to 1080p. […] This was entirely a digital desktop movie," he added. "Picture and sound never hit tape, staying on a hard drive until our final output to HD. Because we'd shot progressive, we had more vertical resolution in post. And on the acquisition end, I was very pleased with the way the camera dealt with color and overexposure. The highlights, in particular, were soft and rounded. Altogether, the images were more filmic than those of other DV cameras." [From the Panasonic Professional Video Products website, 2004.]

Nancy Schreiber: 'I learned to be efficient, think on my feet, and embrace technology.' Today's shortened schedules, budgets, and technologies can be challenging, but Schreiber sees it as part of the scene. 'I started out shooting 35mm, owned an Aaton 16mm, and know film in and out. But early on when documentaries began to be shot on Beta SP, I learned video and became proficient at lighting for the medium. It's made for smoother sailing on these recent digital productions. I have never been a snob about technology. I embrace it, but not just for its own or because it is the new hot trend or because it is the cheapest solution - different technologies may work better for different projects.' Currently, Nancy Schreiber is knee-deep in DSLR [digital single-lens reflex] technology, evaluating it for upcoming projects. 'DSLR technology is really exciting, especially for smaller budgeted projects and where space may be at a premium. The cameras have a remarkably fast ASA and a full sensor. It is quickly becoming a powerful technical tool into the hands of artists. We are seeing ingenious third-party accessories from companies like Red Rock Micro and Zacuto, which will further this creative expansion. And, Canon listens to its users, as, for example modifying the software so that the 5D could be shot at 24p.' Nancy also likes the advantage of working with a small, unobtrusive camera. 'I've been shooting on the streets of Los Angeles with the 5D and 7D, and I can be so invisible that no one even notices.' For the past year, DP's have had significant interest in DSLR. Impressed with what they were seeing, professional cinematographers started to shoot and analyze the DSLR cameras. Nancy notes, 'Every new technology has pros and cons. New tools demand evaluation. The huge DSLR sensor, for example, makes amazing images, but you have to understand how to use it. You need a superior focus puller to help you with its shallow depth of field. There is compression, but you just need to be aware of it and its limitations. There needs to be an understanding about usable speeds of panning, and motion. As you would with any new camera, do your own tests and formulate your own approach. The power of the image information is breathtaking, but you need to know how to get the most out of it.'
