Born: 27 October 1964, Houston, Texas, USA, as John Bradley Rushing.

Education: High School for Performing & Visual Arts, Houston [1980-82]; University of Houston [1982-86].

Career: 'My entree to cinematography beginning in the late 1980s was narratives, especially independent features. I started out with indie films then began shooting direct-to-video and tvm's before moving on to theatrical festival and studio films. In 2002 I began shooting high end music videos and commercials, including iconic work like Eminem's multi-award winning 'Without Me' [2002], Moby's 'We Are All Made of Stars' [2002], which won me an MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography, and Britney Spears' 'Toxic' [2003]. My work continues to include features as well as high end commercials and music videos for both major and emerging artists. I have always been very deliberate in seeking out diverse projects and not letting myself be labeled with any one style. For instance 'Cook County' is a dark, aggressive film that examines a family torn apart by methamphetamine. The lighting is very stark and contrasty and intrusive. I used flares to punctuate emotional beats in the narrative. While 'Divorce Invitation' is a bittersweet romantic comedy with broad, gentle soft lighting and lots of beauty work. I shot a $2 million web series called 'Aim High' [2nd season] for Warner Brothers/Wonderland/Bandito Brothers in May/June 2012. Web distributed media is a fast expanding new world that I am excited to explore. I have often had the good fortune to be among the first to work with new technologies. While I have been working in the business for 25 years now and the great majority of my work is on 35mm film, I have also been eager to master the digital cameras. I shot two pictures with the Sony F900 when they were brand new and I have done a great deal of work recently with the RED camera and the ARRI ALEXA. One of my specialties is vfx work. I became involved in visual effects cinematography early on in my career. I have worked with many world class vfx supervisors and houses. I have shot green screen, blue screen, luma key, plates, motion control, miniatures as well as high-speed photography with both Photo-Sonics and Phantom HD cameras. My vfx work ranges from the spectacular, like in the multi-million dollar music video 'Freeek!' [2002] for George Michael, to the subtle, where I used green screen to create a seamless tumbling cigarette effect in 'Cook County'. In addition to my cinematography I am very active in outreach to young people in schools and entering the industry. In 1995 I taught a Cinematography class at Columbia College. I have spoken at a number of colleges including USC, UCLA [2005], Loyola University, New Orleans [2007], and Cal Arts [I will be speaking there for a 3rd time in October 2012]. I have mentored more young people than I can count and I have had several of them over the years sleeping on my couch as they moved out to L.A. to begin their careers. Many times I have given young people their first job in the industry and watched with pride as they became established and successful in their careers.'
