From interview
[dir by Michael Daniele Driscoll, 2012]
Born: ?, Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Education: McGill University, Montréal [Literature & Communications]; Concordia University [CU], Montréal [Film].
Career: 'I grew up in a home that had a predisposition towards the visual arts, but in a city, Montreal, where children under 10 [at that time] weren't allowed to go to movies. Also, we didn't have a television until a certain age, so I lived without that. So when my father sneaked us in to see 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', when I was eight or nine, while it was playing in reruns, it made a huge impression on me. I don't remember seeing many movies until I got to high school, when I started skipping classes to see films. When I was in high school, my friends and I had a Super 8 camera and we made some little movies. As it turned out in Canada, partly as the result of government policy and nationalism, they wanted to create a film industry. I was interested in storytelling. I was studying literature in Montreal. At one point I lost interest and I switched to communications because it was closer to film. At the same time, I shot some 16mm for a friend's short no-budget film. Then I transferred to Concordia, which has a film production program, probably the biggest in Quebec.'
Ph commercials and music videos.
Awards: Festival des Films du Monde 'Student Award' [1981; ex aequo] for 'Second Story Man'; Golden Sheaf Award nom [1994] for 'Gambit'; 'Gemini' Award nom [1997] for 'Little Criminals'; 'Leo' Award nom [200?] for 'Cold Squad' [ep #69 'The Shed' dir by Peter Mitchell]; 'Leo' Award nom [2008] for 'Intelligence' [ep #14 'A Man Escapes' dir by Stephen Surjik]; ASC TV Award nom [2008] for 'Flashpoint' [ep #5 'Who's George?' dir by Holly Dale].

Stephen Reizes: 'People talk about these hour-long tapes, but video cameras do not have the same sensibility as movie cameras. One has a different attitude when one's shooting this very precious and still magical chemical thing that has to go to the lab and you can't see the results 'til later. The whole experience of waiting to see how the images look is lovely, because they don't look the same as through the viewfinder or the video assist. It's somehow always better on film. If you can just roll the digital media 24 hours a day and capture it, you might capture some great moments, but the story may never be a reflection of what's in the director's head. There may never be the confluence of everybody's focus, like a live performance where all the pieces are in place, and it's rolling through the camera like that. I don't think things are going to change in the next while anyway.' [From interview with KODAK Canada OnFilm, 2008.]
