#1: From interview [Film New Zealand, 2014]
Born: 1968, North Carolina, USA, as Timothy D. Orr.
Education: Appalachian State University [Political Science]; North Carolina School of the Arts [NCSA] - School of Filmmaking, Winston-Salem [graduated in 1998].
Career: 'I had little to no film experience before entering NCSA. I had made a couple of Super 8 films, and had begun writing screenplays, but they were all dreadful. I had heard that the North Carolina School of the Arts had opened a film school, so I applied. My intention then was to become a writer/director. The first two years were spent learning a bit of everything; writing, directing, editing, cinematography. Everyone served as crew members on each other's films. I found that I had an affinity for the camera and a talent for lighting. At the end of the first two years, we were to declare a major. I chose cinematography. I shot several projects on video, and three 16mm short films. This was one of the most important aspects of the film program at NCSA. We had the opportunity to work on a lot of films. From the first week as a first year student I was out with a video camera, beginning to learn the basics of telling a story with a camera.' [From the KODAK Campus Beat website.]

Raising Victor Vargas/Long Way Home [Peter Sollett] s16-35bu/c; + 2 days add shooting in January 2002; expanded version of short film 'Five Feet High and Rising' (1999; d/ph: P. Sollett); 'I was a bit concerned about shooting Super 16. This was the first time I had shot that format for blow-up, and I had seen few good examples. Most blow-ups I had seen were too flat and grainy for my taste. To get a good blow-up you actually need more light because you're working with a smaller negative. I found that overexposure, coupled with a deeper stop produced the best results. I overexposed the negative by one stop and shot most all of the interiors at a T4. In 35mm I will shoot faster film and work at more open apertures, like T2 or T2.8. I like to work with low light levels, to keep the look as natural and real as possible, so it was a challenge using more light and still maintaining a natural look.' |
