Born: 6 October 1945, Moscow (or Kharkov/Kharkiv, Ukraine), USSR, as Юрий Нейман.
Education: VGIK, Moscow.
Career: Worked in the USSR as Director of Photography/SFX Supervisor on about half a dozen films. Applied to emigrate from the USSR to the USA in 1978. Traveled to Italy via Vienna and befriended Italian doph Luciano Tovoli; went to New York 4 months later and worked as a camera technician.
Shot a short feature [30m] for a New York University student.
Moved to Los Angeles in 1988 and ph commercials and music videos.
Developed, with Sacha Riviere, a system of image control for cinematographers during the film-to-tape process and formed the company Gamma & Density Co., Inc. in Studio City, California.
Co-founder [in 2012], president and CEO of the Global Cinematography Institute.
Member of the ASC since 2008.
Active as director: 'Heart of the Deal' [1990; co-dir + ph], the music video 'Two Hearts' [1993; a: Chris Isaak], etc.
Awards: CableACE Award nom [1992] for 'Heart of the Deal'.

After being shut down after 14 days of shooting [in December 2000], there were a total of 21 scenes missing from the film and Barnette waited for a year to receive extra shooting time only to receive 1 day, which was used to film 41 set-ups needed to piece the movie together [2001]. |
