JOHN NEWBY ASC |
Born: ?, as John C. Newby.
Education: Boston University [Film/TV Production].
Career: 'My mother gave me her Kodak Brownie Hawkeye bellows camera when I was 9. I used the 'light meter' on the film box and was amazed by the images that came out of that camera. I was also fascinated by each week's issue of 'Life', which had real-life images from around the world that were so well shot. At Boston University, while minoring in film/television production, I apprenticed to become a licensed projectionist, running old arc-light projectors in 3,000-seat theaters. I was entranced by that beam of light passing through a 35mm rectangle onto a huge screen. Later, I ran the film labs and edited news film at Boston TV stations. When 'The Brink's Job' came to Boston, I worked on huge night scenes as one of 16 arc-lamp operators. I was getting closer to the camera, but I was still 75 yards away! [...] Ed Hershberger got me on a job loading Photo-Sonics cameras for car crashes at a test track.' [From the ASC website.]
Member of the ASC since 2002.
Awards: ASC TV Award nom [2005] for 'Las Vegas' [ep #54 'Everything Old is You Again' dir by David Solomon].

Sexual Healing [Howard Cushnir] tvm/40m; Howard Cushnir made some money writing screenplays but, like many screenwriters, what he really wanted was to direct. He decided to finance his own movie - but only had enough to make a rough demo reel. And he felt guilty asking dozens of film professionals and vendors to donate time and products just to benefit his career. Turning the project into a charitable event solved both his problems. 'So, as soon as we started to say this was an AIDS benefit, people started donating all kinds of stuff. We got lighting equipment and film stock and a 40-foot semi.' The free services enabled him to make a film that looked good enough for Showtime-tv to buy it. [Steve Weinstein in the Los Angeles Times, 1993.] |
