#1: From interview [2010]
Born: ? June 1955, Chicago. A.k.a. Jeff Jur.
Education: Film Department of Columbia College, Chicago.
Career: 'Through a film class in high school, I found filmmaking to be the perfect language for a shy kid. I made a couple of Super 8 films, and then, a 16mm sound film that got me a scholarship to the Columbia College film department. [After college] I worked in Chicago on doc's, industrial films and commercials as a camera assistant and gaffer. It was mostly 16mm and a little 35mm, mainly to make some money. While I was doing that I was still shooting dramatic projects for students and faculty members, mainly short films and some documentaries. I actually got a lucky break in Chicago and got a chance to shoot 4 American Playhouse films. The PBS-series was based on short stories by famous authors. The last one, 'The Roommate', my first opportunity shooting 35mm, was actually made as a feature. These were seen on a national level and gave me some exposure in Hollywood.' [From interview on the KODAK OnFilm website.]
Awards: ASC TV Award [2002] for 'Last Call'; ASC TV Award [2003] & 'Emmy' Award [2004] for 'Carnivàle' [ep #6]; ASC TV Award nom [2005] for 'Carnivàle' [ep #13]; 'Emmy' Award nom [2005] for 'Carnivàle' [ep #21]; ASC TV Award nom [2009] for 'FlashForward' [ep #7 'The Gift' dir by Nick Gomez]; ASC TV Award nom [2015] for 'Bessie'.
Jeffrey Jur: 'A big part of the art of filmmaking is the collaboration - it's a director's vision and the cinematographer's execution based on your taste and experience - who you are and where you are in your life. I don't think that will change. I think the digital intermediate technology will be part of our future. It gives you more control and more choices, so you can be more creative. I'm a computer guy. I've had a Mac since 1984. I love it as a tool, but I still believe in the importance of the original image. I want to get as much of the look that I can on the original negative. Post-production manipulation can add to and amplify your ideas. I love shooting on film. It has an emotional resonance that I haven't seen in any digital image. There is a difference between grain and pixels, and people respond differently.' [From interview on the KODAK OnFilm website.]
