GU CHANGWEI

This is a Chinese name; the family name is Gu.

Born: 12 December 1957, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. Also written as Changwei Gu.

Education: Beijing Film Academy [graduated in 1982].

Career: Began his cinematic career in the now legendary 1982 class of the Beijing Film Academy, today known as the 'Fifth Generation'. Trained as a cinematographer, he was assigned to the Xi'an Film Studio after graduation where he served as a primary collaborator with classmates Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou on their early films.

Also active as actor and artist [photos, installations and videos] with exhibitions in Shanghai and Beijing.

Was a member of the ASC [1995-?].

Married to actress Wenli Jiang.

Appeared in the doc 'Fengkuang yingyu/Crazy English' [1999; d + ph: Yuan Zhang].
