#3: With doph Ross Berryman [top] [1973]
Born: 1950, London, UK. Immigrated to Australia in 1959.
Career: 'I had a four-year apprenticeship lined up at a place where I would learn how to fix smashed up cars. A couple of days before I was supposed to go, my mother noticed an advertisement for a trainee with a company that produced television films. It was an opportunity to be a gofer while learning about film and television production. I applied and got the job. The company was Crawford Productions in Melbourne. I was there for 18 months, and then I left and did an internship with a fairly well known still photographer. I spent most of my time with him in the darkroom making prints. I did another short apprenticeship with a fashion, retail photographer, and then out of the blue I decided to join the Navy. I was a Naval airman ph for six years. The Navy only had one aircraft carrier. There were eight photographers onboard. We filmed every landing and take-off with an old Bell & Howell windup, 16mm camera. But after six years, I had enough, so I got out and went back to the production company in Melbourne. They were doing four fairly popular tv shows. I was an assistant for a couple of months, but then I got promoted and was put on one of the shows as senior cameraman. [After that] I went to work for the government, for the Electricity Commission, shooting, producing, directing and editing training films for engineers. Then I received a phone call from Byron Kennedy who introduced himself and said two directors recommended me to him. Another director who was about to make a movie with Byron Kennedy got on the phone. It was George Miller and they were about to make a film called 'Mad Max'. This was in 1977 and I had only worked on one 35mm format film as an operator - a feature film called 'The Box'.' [From interview with KODAK OnFilm.]

"Riddick" is only my second feature using a digital system and I have to admit I love the ALEXA. Can't wait to use the new ALEXA Studio 4:3 chip and optical viewfinder. Sky's the limit. Am rating at the native 800 ASA. Takes a little getting used to but it's all the same math. Just sees into the shadows a little too much. Looking forward to the DI, to see if the camera's 14 stops latitude combined with the Codex ARRI Raw file lives up to the expectations.' [David Eggby on the ACS website.] |
