MICHAEL BARRETT   ASC

Born: 28 May 1970, Riverside, CA., USA, as Michael Bradley Barrett.

Education: UCLA [BA Art History, 1992]; Columbia University, School of the Arts, New York [CU] [MFA Film, 1996].

Career: 'When I was in high school I thought I might want to be a filmmaker. There was an art house theater relatively close to our home. I remember seeing 'La perla/The Pearl' [1945], photographed by Gabriel Figueroa. Of course, I didn't know that he shot it or even what a cinematographer did. In 1992, I had a chance meeting with Mr. Figueroa at a hotel in New York City. I realized that I still remembered specific images from nearly ten years earlier. [...] There were some art professors whom I admired. I studied painting, printmaking and photography. One of my painting professors suggested that I take some film classes. The cinematography instructor was very encouraging. He would call my mistakes "experimentation." After UCLA, I moved to New York to study film at Columbia University. I knew at this point that I wanted to be a cinematographer. They didn't have a cinematography program, which I suspected might be a good thing. There were three or four of us who would shoot everything. I shot more than 40 short films for other students and a number of music videos for local bands. When I was preparing to do my thesis at Columbia, the faculty asked me whom I wanted as an advisor. I wrote a letter to Allen Daviau and asked if he might be interested. About a month after I sent that letter, there was a voice on my answering machine saying, "I just got back from Costa Rica, and I'm going to be in Los Angeles timing a film. If you're around, come on by." The school paid for my ticket from New York to Los Angeles. […] I made a reel using the short films and showed it to an agent. He said that he would help me get started. I started shooting films with $50,000 to $100,000 budgets. My third or fourth film was 'Finding North'. The director was Haskell Wexler's niece, Tanya Wexler. She suggested that I call and talk to her uncle. We had a few conversations on the phone, and he invited me to visit sets where he was shooting. I was around 24 or 25. My agent would tell people that I was older. When I went out on interviews, people would say that I looked young for my age - and they were right! […] I was wrapping up a movie in Texas, when I got a call asking if I was interested in shooting an episode of 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'. It was my first time on a television series. We had three or four regular directors and the occasional guest director. I rotated episodes with another director of photography. I liked this system because it afforded me eight days of preparation before each episode.' [From interview with Bob Fisher on the KODAK OnFilm website.]
