From interview
'In the
70's movie photography generally has reached such superb standards that only the
very best cameramen stand out from the crowd. Ghislain Cloquet is one of these. Like all
great cameramen, his genius lies in his ability to embody the director's vision
in the textures and tones of his images. From a career crowded with outstanding
achievements, in both color and monochrome, mention should be given to (color)
the leisurely and graceful camera movements and incandescent lighting of 'Les demoiselles de
Rochefort' and 'Peau d'âne', and (monochrome) the
restless, bravura camerawork and masterly chiaroscuro of 'Mickey
One'. To my mind, however, Cloquet surpasses even his own high standards
in each of his films for André Delvaux. In these mysterious and hermetic works,
Cloquet often achieves, with photography of breathtaking beauty and delicacy,
textures that are almost painterly, as in the shot (in 'Rendez-vous à
Bray') of Anna Karina looking out of a window whilst holding a mixing bowl, a
composition of which Vermeer would have been proud.' [David Badder in 'Film
Dope', #7, April 1975.]
